Bitrate isn´t the problem. Greater bitrates produce best image quality. If you are not able to open mp4 files in your video editing software that is for sure a codec issue. The best image quality is always obtained using uncompressed formats or image sequence. When rendering to MP4 I had a problem with some (not all) of the scenes failing to open in my video editor. The determining factor was whether or not the clip had audio.
