uploading headache.. Hi Artpen

There could be a few reasons why it failed to upload. The file size is OK by youTube's standards but it's a hefty file to pass through your internet connection. Maybe that timed out or something? Another reason could be its length - it has to be under 15 minutes long.

It sounds to me that you've made uncompressed video. That would explain its size. What you need to do is pick a codec from Muvizu's video preferences page. Muvizu will scan your PC and populate its list with all the codecs it finds on your PC. There are a few exceptions, Quicktime being the obvious omission.

So the first step is to ensure you have some decent codecs on your PC. XVID or DIVX are two popular ones. They made great quality movies with tiny file sizes. They're not suitable choices if you want to pass your Muvizu video through Adobe Premiere but for uploading to the web they are ideal.

Secondly, resolution. This has an impact on file size, but not as much as proper codec choice, so go ahead and try a full HD output with XVID codec. Your file size will be tens-of-megabytes rather than hundreds.

With these two approaches you'll have a youTube compliant video that will upload in a few minutes.

New tutorials made Yeah, sorry Kaynine. All the tutorials are brand new but your old set isn't obsolete. 99% of the way Muvizu works is exactly the same. You'll not have to relearn anything. Making the videos is a long process so I looked at the old set desperately trying to see what we could reuse. Unfortunately there were enough small changes for me to warrant a fresh batch of tutorials.

I'm sure you would watch the new videos and think, 'hang on, I know all this'

If I could point you at some things you may not know, take a look at the following:

#7 - Importing 3D models. Brand new

#11 - cue points

#12 - advanced dialogue. Has a neat trick for managing complicated dialogue using cue-points

#15 - camera animation. Brand new

Hope this helps

New tutorials made Hi, this is just a newbie pointer but I've re-recorded all of the video tutorials. People looking forward to voice talent oozing with international appeal and gravitas will be disappointed - they've been recorded in my native Glaswegian again.

Look! a big pink "Tutorials" button at the top of the page

Awrabest. Guid luck wi' Muvizu

Codecs Codec choice depends on what you want to do with your Muvizu clip. I'd say if you want to do a quick Muvizu clip and publish online then go for XVID or DIVX. Both of these codecs make high-quality movies with very small file sizes. Both of these codecs write AVI files that are MP4 compression. MP4, incidently, is about the best we're at with internet video. Many of the high-end quicktime trailers and even youTube's internal format is MP4.

But, if you want to push your Muvizu clip through a post-process or editing application then do not use XVID or DIVX. The MP4 system is not suitable for editing. It breaks down when you try to scrub through the file. I spent ages trying to find a codec for "Geraldo and the Plan." In the end I found the K-Lite codec pack and opted to use lossless motion-JPEG. I got big (but not huge) files that could be used in Adobe Premiere.

open door? You have to cheat:

Position the open door and place two backdrops each side of it to give the appearance of a continuous wall. This was how I did the effect in "An Introduction to Brian Priest"

New forum software please? Hi KiltedNinja

We're making a brand new website which will go live soon and the processes for uploading and posting are simpler and clearer (hopefully). But you're right - the present process for uploading a video is a little clouded and mysterious. Here's how you do it:

1) Make sure you have a Muvizu account and a youTube account. Log into both

2) On the Muvizu website look above the SEARCH box. You'll see the phrase "You are logged in as *name*"

3) Click on your name. It will take you to your profile page

4) Look for the ASSETS box. Click "Upload Asset" and follow the instructions

5) After the upload is completed you'll get an error message. Ignore it - it's a bug with Flash 10.

6) Muvizu's videos are hosted on youTube and because of that there may be a delay before the video appears on our site. Hoever your video will be on youTube fairly quickly

Hope this helps

Tips and Tricks - Any requests?! Sorry, worman13. We've only got one dialogue track. Try using the free sound editor "Audacity" to record and blend together two vocal tracks. That's what we do in-house

More Characters Hello

Our animators are dying to make a quadroped rig so it's a feature that's already on our radar. I'm not sure when we'll get around to doing it though. It's a massive job and then there's the question of which quadroped you pick - mouse, dog, elephant, AT-AT?

We'll put our thinking caps on

Dialogue timing Hi Simon

Thanks for your suggestion. This is a problem that's existed for a while and hopefully our new Timeline Editor makes dialogue a wee bit easier to align. Your suggestion did make me think that Muvizu could benefit from an embedded audio editor. Hmmm, I think I'll mention it to our Lead Coder....

Tutorial downloads Great idea. At home I also suffer from crap bandwidth so I'll arrange for the tutorials to be available as downloads at a slightly higher res too.

Import things You guys have hit on a feature we're already thinking about. There's a lot to consider before our (talented) coders start writing exporters and 3D-app plugins. But if your appetite's in need of whetting....we've already started speaking to some of the 3D big-boys.

Ideas for more moviefeeling These are all brilliant ideas and I've put them all into our wish-list. Thanks for the feedback and hopefully we can include some of these features in a future Muvizu update.

Object interaction Yeah the ability to hold things is a favourite of the Muvizu team as well. We'll do what we can to get phones, cups, guns and torches into a future Muvizu release...but it's difficult! eek!

Thanks for suggesting it. We'll try our best

Cameras and objects Agree x 3.

Moving cameras, better controls and animatable properties are all favourite ideas within the Muvizu team. Hopefully we'll see them soon. These features are in our wish-list which is a guarantee that they'll at least be CONSIDERED for inclusion in the next big Muvizu release...No promises though!

The ability to edit the animations more visual Thanks for the input. We're looking at all the ideas and suggestions and working out a plan for the next few months. Hopefully the animation-editing complaint has now been addressed with our new Timeline Editor. Mo-cap's an interesting idea....My (rudimentary) knowledge of our animation system tells me that it would be v. hard to do. But, I'm not a programmer. I've put the idea down on our wish-list. Keep the ideas coming...

What I think would be most important There is no geater MAC fanboy and fangirl than our MD and Project Manager. That said, however, it's a VERY tall order getting Muvizu to run on a Mac. I've put this idea and all the others into our post-beta wish list. Thanks for suggesting them and, please, kepp the ideas coming.

Things I would like to see. D'you know we had the character hooked up to a joystick ages ago. It was a lot of fun and it's something that we seem to promise ourselves but always drop when a hideously complicated code-problem emerges. It's high-up on our wish-list....so with a bit of luck.....

some minor additions that could be helpful :) Hi Phoneixomen

Firstly, let me thank you for such a well-thought-out and put together list of suggestions. Hopefully you can see we've addressed some of your ideas in the new Beta version. As for the rest, I'm pleased to see you've hit on some of the Team's favourite ideas too - moveable objects being a big one. No promises, mind, but I've put the rest of these ideas into our big wish-list.
