I am getting so much information on programs to load, that I am going to fill up my computer. Plus, a place to store all the video files would be a plus. I do not have any techie friends to ask, so since I know you all use maximum space, too, I figured why not ask here.

I have used both Seagate and Western before and they both have crashed. I have not been using one one in about 5 years. Suggestions?

Posts: 2220 		Really they all tend to be reasonably robust now.
You might want to pick a few key things from this list to base your purchase on:
-large capacity to price
-long warranty
-good reviews (even read the bad ones to see what happens if something goes wrong)

Personally I've been using a Samsung M3 1tb drive that I plan to replace for something bigger soon which is apparently actually manufactured by Seagate.

Also, to lower the chance of damage, you'll want to treat it fairly carefully to avoid accidental drops or anything that could damage the disk.

and put a couple of 1/2TB drives inside (Best go with WD Red for this)


If you want to, you're also able to set it up so that it puts the same information on both drives so if one fails, your data is not lost.

Posts: 1988 		Rocque, if you have USB 3 then an external drive is a good idea, for USB 2 it isn't so much (too slow IMO). When looking for an external drive, avoid anything that says 'portable' because with them you're paying for the physical size, not capacity or speed. Lots of manufacturers simply rebadge someone else's HDD and stick it inside an enclosure, so check the specs! NAS drives are a good idea if you have lots of family members also trying to access the storage, but if it's only going to be yourself using it then they are probably unnecessary. Hope that helps

Posts: 359 		Thanks for the information on the HDs. My last one was a smaller one that I could take to work and back home, but it did get dropped. That explains what happened to it. I will be updating my computer one of these days, too, but am not sure what size HD to look for. I tend to keep too many files. I am a file pack rat.

Posts: 1988 		I know what you mean - I have two 2tb drives, a 1tb, two SSDs, and the external 2tb. When you make stuff in 1080p and you soon realise the importance of hard disk space!
