how can one incorporate a vector or photoshop file into muvizu?

Convert it to a normal image file, .png / .jpg / .bmp or .gif

what is a backdrop, onto which one can import a png file?

Under the create tab after characters and objects you will find different backdrops which can then be scaled to suit your purpose

I have tried to add all different files to create a backdrop. I have PLAY+, I thought it would have been a little more like it says on the tin. Seems to boast a lot, but when it actually comes down to it, it is not as good as it tries to make out
