I just introduced myself in the post for "newbies".
I have created a website to provide kids stories : http://www.raconte-nous-une-histoire.com.

I have purchased Muvizu because I wanted to try to animate some of the stories. I am not the most talented here compared to some of you !!! But I am just trying to give some fun to the kids and bring awareness to my site via nice videos, eventhough I don't make any money from this. My own kids love these animated stories. But I don't have time to make too many... So far just 2 in several month ;(

I wish I could use a frog or some other animals from the story but could not find this in Muvizu...

Sorry, the stories are inf French, maybe I will translate some in English

The visuals are excellent, but the sound quality is not as good as it could be. It sounds like you are using only one microphone, and it is picking up a lot of ambient noise.

I would recommend two microphones, one very close to the speaker, and another near the audience to pick up the children's reactions.

Whatever microphone you are currently using is fine for the children, but for the main performer you need something with better quality.

My recommended mic is the Blue Yeti, it is inexpensive (US$100 ish), has a direct USB out, as it can be set to a unidirectional (cardioid) pattern. It will improve the quality of your sound enormously. There are a few other USB mics in this price range, but the Blue is easily the best. The Shure PG42 is a slightly better mic, but it is also more than double the price.

Whichever mic you get, make sure it is set to a cardioid ("one direction only") recording pattern. Also set it close to your storyteller - no more than 15-20 cm away.


PS, you may not know the name, but Blue are a highly respected manufacturer of professional grade recording microphones... (which aren't cheap, eg. the Blue Bottle at $6000 or so http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Bottle/)

I fully agree with your comments, but unfortunately, I can't invest much more money at this time into this project.
As I said, I don't make any money from this at this point, and have already spent some to buy a digital recorder and microphone that would fit the need, plus purchased Muvizu Play +... At that time, I thought I could maybe create more animations and have a lot of traffic on my web site that also took me 3-4 months to create, but so far, I don't have much traffic at all... because I am not referenced well enough with Google yet.
I have been working on SEO for a while and have improved many things but I certainly lack backlinks....
Having said that, I will certainly upgrade my material if my site gets more popular... but on the other end, especially for the second story I posted here, the author was still installing the microphone while the recording and the story had already started... so it did not help, and as this is improvisation and I liked the story, I did not want him to start all over again... I should find a way to record the children with a different microphone indeed, later... I would like to hear them more...

I keep this in mind in case I can inverst more money in this project... ! Thanks a lot anyway !!!

On the other side, I don't understand how I could also have a microphone for the kids... in the same recording ? Or would I need to mix the 2 entries afterwards with like Audiacity ?

Posts: 59 		For your videos, you really need to start using a multi-track audio approach. Even though my French is mediocre, there were points where sound effects would have really added to the production. (And of course there is music). So you might use four (or even more) audio tracks.

To prepare your multi-track audio, you can use Audacity, or another excellent product is Presonus Studio One (the full version is $500, but there is a smaller version for free).

There are a lot of websites which offer free sound effects, as well as licence-free background music (don't use any copyrighted music without permission).


As far as a quality microphone, it will be a good investment as you can use it for many different purposes. I now own over 60 of them (sound is my profession however, I am still finding my way with visuals).

Thanks again for the tips ! I had already worked with Audiacity and added some sound effects when the character claps his hands... but I uploaded the wrong version to Youtube... too bad. I will be more careful next time. I have also already used a music that is copyright free for the begining and end... If I make another one, I will take your advice in account, but can't invest money at this time...

Seconded! On your recommendation I bought one (cos I was just looking at getting a new mic when I read your post), and it is so damn good. It makes you sound professional pretty much straight away, which is welcome to say the least Thanks for the tip Oziabla! Thumbs Up

Posts: 59 		My pleasure. I run a commercial recording studio in Sydney, plus I've done a lot of sound for film and TV, so it's something I know a lot about (unlike animation where I am a total newbie).

Posts: 1786 		LOL dreeko that is what i use as well and my "recording studio" is a big plastic box that I purchased at canadian tire and lined with egg crate foam you buy in the bedding section to put on top of beds.

I am very high tech Big Grin
