Hi Billybass,

Welcome to Muvizu!

Our minimum specs are:

  • 2.4GHz processor
  • Nvidia 7800 GTX or ATI 1300 graphics card
  • 2.3GB free drive space

Hope that helps.

Good luck and happy animating

Thanks, Emily! Just for clarification, does the "ati 1300" spec refer to the ati "x1300"?

Thx again!

Hi Marvin,

Yes it was the ati "x1300". Possibly that was a typo!

Cheers.

Emily.

Hi all,

If you are looking for advice on which graphics card to buy the website "Toms's Hardware" does a "Best Value" graphics card guide every month.

The prices are in US $ but the cheap cards on the list are still relatively cheap in the UK:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/geforce-gtx-460-radeon-hd-5570-gaming,review-31965.html

For instance I have found the NVidia GT240 for less than ÂŁ50

Take care,
-Jim

Thanks again, Emily! Regrettably, I suspected as much. I figured I'd have to replace my aged ATI 9250, Pixel Shader 2.0 being among the main missing features.

@Jim: Thank you very much for the graphics card reference from Tom's Hardware. Unfortunately, my even older motherboard supports only PCI. Which begs a second question then: is there such a creature as an ATI PCI card that supports DirectX 9.0c (again, only Pixel Shader 2.0+ need apply) and if so, who still sells one? Okay, I guess I threw a third one in there...sue me! Off to gurgle search it, just thought I'd ask while I was lurking about

Hi again Marvin,

I have had a quick look over the last couple of days and the only place that I could find with a variety of cards is.......eBay.

Unfortunately a lot of the sellers can't seem to tell the difference between a PCI and PCI-Express card, but these cards are PCI and should work:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PNY-NVIDIA-GeForce-8400GS-512MB-PCI-VGA-DVI-I-/230497334456?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Nvidia-Geforce-8400GS-PCI-512MB-DDR2-LP-8400-GS-/310238708473?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GeForce-8400GS-Graphics-Card-512MB-PCI-Video-Card-DVI-/250683476670?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW

Edit: Just found it on Amazon - better customer support from them I would imagine :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/PNY-Technologies-nVIDIA-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B001ZZXY98/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1282656583&sr=8-1

The GeForce 8 series cards all have Pixel Shader 2.0 support, so they should work with Muvizu.

Take care,
-Jim.

I plugged in a GF7300 GT 512mb and that has made a huge difference. Whereas it used to crawl around it now flys and the mouse is easy to use to manipulate. I can load high object sets and easily add lots of characters. What a difference.

Fantastic ghrenig!

I'm happy that you can now fly around your set.
Was that what you used to create 'The Weather Man'?

Good work!

Thanks for your comment and no, I managed that on my clunky laptop. Working on a couple of new clips.
Looks like you have all been working hard. It certainly seems to have paid off.
The newsite looks good. Like the bigger more obvious headers/buttons and search option.
Sounds like you have added some great functions to the application. Looking forward to playing with all the new goodies. Crikey don't know were I am going to find time to crank up my old copy of blender, people keep on phoning me up with work to do, don't they understand, I have more important things to do.

Well all, thank you very much for contributing to an informative thread--most helpful. Regrettably, due to various reasons, upgrading is NOT in my immediate future

BillyBass, I hope these fine people have provided YOU with some helpful info, and I wish you and the rest the very best in your endeavors. I look forward to seeing how much Muvizu has matured once I procure a system hefty enough to run it Big Grin

Cheerz!

Hi Marvin,

If you can't replace your graphics card you might want to give this guide that I posted in the resources section a try:

http://www.muvizu.com/forum/topic463-performance-increase-programmes.aspx

It tells you how to set up a piece of software that MIGHT be able to get below-spec graphics cards to work with Muvizu. It's not guaranteed to work, and please remember that you use any 3rd party software at your own risk.

Take care,
-Jim.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for the 3DAnalyzer info. I forgot about this utility--haven't used it in years and had no idea that it was still being supported.

Anyway, after following your instructions, I regrettably received the same error messages. Ah well...

In case you or anyone else cares to help me tackle this, here is what occurs:

  • 1. I launch Muvizu (or in this case, I launch via 3danalyzer).
  • 2. After a few moments, I receive the following error message: "This game requires at least Shader Model 2.0"
  • 3. After clicking OK, I receive the next message: "An error has occurred: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt."

That's it.

My system specs are as follows:

  • COMPUTER: Dell Dimension 2400
  • CPU: 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 (Prescott)
  • MEMORY: 2 GB DDR
  • VIDEO: ATI Radeon 9250 256 MB DDR (DirectX 8.1 card)
  • OS: Windows XP SP3
  • DIRECTX: v9.0c

Any help is appreciated, but I suspect a hardware upgrade is in store, once I'm employed again (LoL). Thanks again for all your help Jim. Cheers!

Hi Marvin,

It's a pity that it didn't work - the rest of your machine looks like it could handle the Unreal 3 engine thought.

Good luck on the job hunt - I know how much I hated being unemployed!

Take care,
-Jim.

Having upgaded my graphics card, the machine tends to close down after a while. Having looked at the specs of the card it needs a 400w power supply . I replaced the new graphics card with original card and all works well except I can hardly move about the sets. The graphics card seems to make a huge difference to speed of use. So I have now orderd a new power supply unit for my desktop and hopefully it should arrive today. Will take about 15 mins to change the power supply unit. Since I built the machine myself it isn't a problem. I am an old Geek , which has its advantages sometimes.

A decent PSU is one thing that's often overlooked by people building a PC - a decent 400-500W PSU can outperform a poor 750W one most times, and they are also a lot cheaper to run. I also love the ones that have a modular design - that allows you to remove the cables you don't need and improve airflow inside your PC.

Hi Jim/All!

Thanks, Jim, for the good wishes! So, tried emulating Pixel Shader 2.0 in software with SwiftShader...yikes! Muvizu finally loaded, but screen updated once every 3 - 5 seconds... Interface looks nice, though!

Hello Marvin,

0.2-0.3 fps - ouch - it was worth a try, but you could always make a stop-motion flick . Neill and Alan will be pleased about the interface!

I have never used SwiftShader - is it any good?

Take care,
-Jim.
